MURCHISON FALLS
The Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest wildlife park and is split in two by the mighty Nile River. It is located in the northwest of Uganda, about a seven-hour drive from Kampala. The landscape varies from dense rainforest in the hilly southwestern part to flat savannahs in the northwest. Murchison Falls is one of the greenest parks in Africa due to its location on the Nile!
THE NILE
Perhaps the most impressive thing that happens to the Nile on its long journey from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea are the Murchison Falls. The longest river in the world plunges down here over a width of less than six meters explosively in a cloud of sparkling white water. The 3860 km² park is named after the Murchison Falls, which in turn are named after the Scotsman Roderick Murchison, founder of the Royal Geographical Society. The park is also known as Kabalega Falls National Park. During the regime of Idi Amin, the national parks were renamed after the African names. The park is home to Rothschild giraffes, hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, several species of antelopes (including the ‘Ugandan Cob’) and many tropical bird species (450 species, including the shoebill stork).
