Description:
Imigongo paintings are truly an art form popular in Rwanda traditionally made by women. This unique and beautiful painting art is made with wooden dental plaque and pigment paint. Years ago, there was once a prince who decided to decorate his house by forming geometric shapes on the wall of the hut. This technique was developed and now made by women. Often in the colors black, white, red, but other colors are increasingly used. popular themes include spiral and geometric designs painted on walls, pottery and canvas.
The images are produced using natural mixture dough placed on wooden planks in spiral and geometric designs. The dough is used by hand on a wooden plaque to obtain the desired pattern. This is left to harden for days and then decorated with color made from organic dye material.
The imigongo images were originally found in Kibungo within the walls of huts as “magical” decorations in the 18th century. However, a women’s cooperative in the Eastern Province has saved and revived this unique Rwandan art form. Traditionally, geometric designs are produced, but as the women artists have grown in confidence, they have begun to experiment with more modern, innovative images that convey the spirit of the Rwandan landscape, flora and fauna and people.
This item is handmade with care and with authentic, artistic skills by women in Rwanda, Central East Africa.
