SELOUS GAME RESERVE

SELOUS GAME RESERVE

Selous Game Reserve is the largest game reserve on the African continent. It is about the same size as Switzerland and three times larger than the Serengeti.

Selous Game Reserve is nowadays known as “Nyerere National Park” but is still popularly referred to as Selous or Selous Game Reserve.

Selous is divided into fifty-three sub-regions. Only three of these regions are open for tourism purposes. These three regions are famous for their high numbers of buffaloes, elephants, wildebeest, wildebeest, wildebeest, hippos and lions. Extra special is the presence of the wild dogs. Selous, together with South Luangwa (Zambia), is one of the best places to spot the very special wild dog.

Due to the presence of the water, boat safaris are also carried out in Selous. In fact, it is one of the few parks in Tanzania where this is possible! Depending on the accommodation location, it is possible to go on a boat safari for half a day or a full day. For bird lovers, a boat safari is an absolute must. The large bird population is most easily seen in and around the banks. Of course, the jeep safari is central to the safaris in Selous. Through the various marked paths, travelers discover Selous. The lake area is also often visited during the jeep safari because the concentrations of wildlife here are high. Finally, walking safaris are also offered in Selous. These are carried out under the guidance of experienced and armed rangers. Due to the wide range of safari options (jeep, boat and walking safaris), Selous is the most varied safari destination in Tanzania.

ACTIVITIES AT SELOUS GAME RESERVE

GAME DRIVE

Selous are carried out all day, from dawn to dusk. The safari vehicles in Selous are always open when the safari is carried out by the property. By default, the jeeps are shared with other travelers, but everyone is assured of a place on the ‘outside’. This assures travelers of the best view during the safaris. The open jeeps are occupied by a maximum of six passengers. For an additional fee, the jeeps for private safaris can be bought off.

WALKING SAFARI

A surprising way to experience Selous is by walking safari. Under expert guidance, travelers get (very) close to the wildlife. The emphasis during the walking safari is primarily on safety. In addition, you are interested in what you encounter along the way. These are tracks, flora, birds as well as seeing e.g. gazelles to lions. It can all pass by during a walking safari

BIRD SAFARI

Bird lovers usually go on a boat and/or walking safari so that they can get close to the birds more easily. Of course, it is also possible to focus on birds during the jeep safari. Due to the abundant bird life in Selous, attention is also paid to the birds during every safari activity. However, true enthusiasts are advised to hire a private ranger so that they can enjoy the birds as they wish.

BOAT SAFARI

The boat safaris are carried out in both the morning and afternoon, although the afternoon boat safaris provide the most successful pictures. Then the crocodiles are sunbathing in and around the Rufiji River while the hippos become more active and move towards land. Don’t forget the hundreds of different bird species that are also extensively covered during the boat safari.
