ITINERARY TANZANIA & ZANZIBAR EXPANDED & MIGRATION

DAY 1

KARIBU TANZANIA

On arrival to Kilimanjaro Airport in the evening, where your guide will be waiting. After an initial introduction, it will take you about 45 minutes to drive to the first accommodation in the lush surroundings of Arusha. While enjoying a welcome drink, you will discuss tomorrow’s program with the guide. Karibu sana Tanzania!

DAY 2

QUIET ENJOYMENT OR AN ACTIVE EXCURSION

If you prefer not to spend the rest of the day with a book at the lodge, you can also take a nice excursion in the beautiful surroundings of the lodge today.

ARUSHA

Arusha is the safari capital of Tanzania that acts as a gateway to the various national parks in Northern Tanzania. This lively city is located at the foot of Mount Meru in an attractive hilly and green area.

EXCURSIONS ARUSHA – (OPTIONAL)

There is plenty to do in the area from walking through coffee plantations, visiting a local market, horseback riding, mountain biking at Lake Duluti or even taking a walking safari in the Arusha National Park. There are no felines here but it is a nice first safari introduction in Tanzania. You discuss the wishes and possibilities on the spot with the host/hostess of your accommodation.

DAY 3

ELEPHANTS AND BAOBABS IN TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

You will meet your private driver/guide this morning. After the first acquaintance, the tour really starts! You will drive to the Tarangire National Park. From your lodge you will be provided with a packed lunch so that you can make the most of the time in the first game park of this trip.

TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

The Tarangire National Park is characterized by beautiful views over valleys full of baobab trees and a miraculous amount of elephants. The name of the park is derived from the Tarangire River that flows through the area like a lifeline. In addition to the river, the water of the Silale swamp also attracts many wild animals.

JEEP SAFARI TARANGIRE – AFTERNOON

During the safari in the Tarangire National Park, you will look for the many elephants that live in the park. Around the Tarangire River you will find many game and tropical bird species. In addition to the elephants, you also have a chance to see the various predators and who knows, maybe even an African rock python. When the sun goes down in the afternoon, you go on safari and it becomes exciting what beautiful things you will see. In the evening you can enjoy a campfire with the sounds of the African wilderness in the background.

DAY 4

UNIQUE EXCURSIONS AT LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast you will drive to Mto wa Mbu, located not far from Lake Manyara National Park. The area offers many surprising and active excursions that provide a pleasant change during this safari trip. Due to the wide variety of excursion options, the excursions are offered optionally. Of course, you can also choose not to go on an excursion and only go on safari and enjoy the rest of the time at your accommodation.

LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK

The Lake Manyara National Park is a very pleasant and relatively small nature reserve, sandwiched between the Great Rift Valley and the soda Lake. Despite the park’s small size, the area is home to an unusual number of habitats and animal species. In addition to the soda lake and grasslands, the park also has a groundwater forest that is fed by water that is pushed up along the line of the fault in the Great Rift Valley.

JEEP SAFARI LAKE MANYARA – MORNING

During the safari in Lake Manyara you will visit the different habitats where you will encounter different animal species. For example, in the groundwater forest you will encounter an exceptional number of baboons that are a pleasure to observe. You will also find the famous tree-climbing lions of Manyara in the forest.
On the shore of the lake you will find many bird species, including flamingos, pelicans, ospreys and kingfishers. On the grasslands you will find the larger mammals such as giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and buffaloes. In the morning, you will take an early safari through Lake Manyara National Park. Wildlife is waking up and hornbills are active in the forest.

TREETOP WALKWAY LAKE MANYARA (OPTIONAL)

Manyara Treetop Walkway is the first canopy tour in Tanzania and one of the longest in Africa. During this 370-meter-long suspension bridge through the rainforest of Lake Manyara National Park, you will reach a height of 18 meters and encounter monkey species, birds and perhaps larger game along the way.

GREAT RIFT VALLEY HIKE (OPTIONAL)

Accompanied by an expert guide, you’ll hike on the edge of the ‘Great Rift Valley’ and enjoy expansive views of Lake Manyara. Along the way, you will learn about the plants, insects, birds, and small mammals. (1 hour – 1.5 hours)

MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE LAKE MANYARA (OPTIONAL)

Accompanied by a guide, you will cycle through the green surroundings of Mto wa Mbu during this three-hour tour. You will drive through banana plantations, rice paddies and also stop at the shore of Lake Manyara National Park. You can also opt for a two-hour trip near Mto wa Mbu.

NIGHT SAFARI LAKE MANYARA – (OPTIONAL)

In the evenings, a completely different animal life awakens in the jungle of Lake Manyara National Park. During this 2.5-hour safari you will look for the porcupine, genet and civet cat and who knows, maybe even a leopard, which is seen every now and then. You have a better chance of seeing lions that become active at the fall of the moon!

DAY 5

OFF TO THE WORLD-FAMOUS SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

An exciting safari day is on the program. Today you will leave for the most famous nature park in the world: Serengeti National Park! On the way, you will make a photo stop at the Ngorongoro Crater and then start the safari on the way to your accommodation in the park.

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

The Serengeti National Park is one of the most famous game parks in the world. The Serengeti is home to the most extensive population of wildlife on earth and also includes the most complex and untouched ecosystem. Serengeti means “endless plain” in the language of the Maasai and that is what the Serengeti fully lives up to. On these plains, two million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles roam between the Serengeti and the Masai Mara in Kenya every year, in search of fresh grasslands.

JEEP SAFARI SERENGETI – AFTERNOON

During the safari you will enjoy the beautiful vast landscapes and all the wildlife that can be admired here. The Seronera Valley is known for its large numbers of felines. The guide will do his utmost to spot the lions, cheetahs and leopards for you! Apart from the felines, the attention is of course also focused on all other wildlife. In the afternoon you will go on a safari when the wildlife becomes more active again after a few hours of resting in the shade. In the evening you can enjoy a campfire with the sounds of the African wilderness in the background.

DAY 6

IN SEARCH OF THE 2,000,000 MIGRATING UNGULATES

In the morning you will leave the central part of the Serengeti on a safari and set course for North Serengeti where the Serengeti borders the Masai Mara nature reserve in Kenya. Along the way you will enjoy a picnic lunch and in the afternoon you will make the first safari at the Mara River. A very game-rich day in the Serengeti!

This is the program as offered for the months of July to October, the period that the Great Migration can be found in North Serengeti. If you undertake the trip in the months of November to June, you will visit the Great Trek in another part of the Serengeti (Ndutu or Western Serengeti) and we will adjust this for you in the travel proposal.

JEEP SAFARI TO NORTH SERENGETI (MARA)

Today you will be looking for the more than two million migratory ungulates that make an annual round in the Serengeti eco-system. Although this is a huge amount, they spread out quite often and it is not easy to find the herds, but you will have plenty of time to search. You are in the season of the river crossings of the Mara River. The wildebeest and zebras migrate through the Mara River at many different times in the months of July/August/September/October. Upon arrival in the area, you will immediately take a safari at the Mara River and immediately have a chance to see this unparalleled spectacle. Of course, there is also time for the predators that also reside in North Serengeti during this period.

DAY 7

SAFARI AT THE MARA RIVER

Today is also entirely dedicated to the beautiful Serengeti. In the morning you will make another safari at the Mara River and who knows, you might witness a crossing. After lunch, you will travel back to central Serengeti on a safari.

JEEP SAFARI RIVER CROSSING SERENGETI – MORNING

During the safari you will search along the infamous Mara River. The excitement rises when you see large groups of wildebeest and zebras gathering along the shore and the giant crocodiles taking position, sometimes it takes hours before the first animals make the crossing. But once the first animals have gone, the rest will follow immediately and you will experience what you have always seen on television with programs such as Great Migrations and Planet Earth. A natural phenomenon that is difficult to match and very special and which is only seen by a small number of safari travellers! This safari takes place in the morning!

JEEP SAFARI BACK TO CENTRAL SERENGETI (SERONERA)

At the end of the morning, you will continue the route to central Serengeti and the Seronera Valley. The Seronera Valley is known for its large numbers of felines. The guide will do his utmost to spot the lions, cheetahs and leopards for you! Apart from the feline, the attention is of course also focused on all other wildlife.

BALLOON SAFARI SERENGETI – (OPTIONAL)

Today you will get up at 04:30 for the hot air balloon safari. You will see the sun rise as you fly silently above the vast wilderness, a breathtaking sight. Nature awakens and after an hour-long hot air balloon ride, you will land in a beautiful place where a champagne breakfast will be waiting for you. The balloon safari is always with other travelers.

DAY 8

TRIP TO KARATU NEAR THE NGRONGORO CRATER

A last full morning you will wander the savannahs of the Serengeti for the last encounters with the wild animals. Around noon you will drive out of the Serengeti on a safari to your accommodation at the Ngorongoro crater or Karatu. This afternoon you will enjoy your accommodation and a moment of rest.

If you spend the night in the Ngorongoro Tortilis Camp or the Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp, you can take a beautiful walk through the surroundings of the Ngorongoro Crater this afternoon!

JEEP SAFARI SERENGETI – MORNING

Get up early for a day full of safari spectacle. Early in the morning, the many predators are still active after a night of hunting. It will be exciting to see what you will encounter!

JEEP SAFARI FROM SERENGETI TO THE NGORONGORO CRATER

A last full morning you will wander the savannahs of the Serengeti for the last encounters with the wild animals. Around noon you will drive out of the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater. Upon arrival, you can reminisce about all the impressions you have gained in the Serengeti or take a nice walk through this special environment.

HIKE CRATER RIM NGORONGORO – (OPTIONAL)

In the afternoon you will walk through the ancient jungle on the crater rim of the Ngorongoro crater accompanied by a guide. You will enjoy the mystical jungle with Spanish moss in the branches, which grows here due to the mist that often hangs around the crater rim. Every now and then you can see the immense crater through the trees. This walk takes about an hour. A pleasant activity in between the safaris in the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro crater.

DAY 9

SAFARI IN THE GIANT NGORONGORO CRATER AND TRIP TO ARUSHA

Today is all about safari in the world-famous Ngorongoro crater. After the safari and leaving the crater, drive back to Arusha for a nice dinner at your accommodation.

NGORONGORO CRATER

The Ngorongoro Crater is the most densely populated wildlife area in the world. The crater is home to an estimated 25,000 larger mammals! The crater has a diameter of 17-21 kilometers and the crater floor has an area of about 260 km2. The rim of the crater is about 600 meters above the crater floor and in the center of the crater is a soda lake.

JEEP SAFARI NGORONGORO CRATER – MORNING

In the morning, descend into the crater for a safari across the crater floor, taking in the views and all the wildlife that lives here. You also have the best chance of spotting a rhino here. Around noon you will enjoy lunch at the picnic area and then leave the crater again.

DAY 10

FLIGHTS TO TROPICAL ZANZIBAR

In the morning you can enjoy a nice breakfast in the beautiful garden of your lodge. You will then be taken to the airport where you will say goodbye to the guide before departing with your flight to Zanzibar. On site, a Wild Heritage of Africa Tour and Travel representative will be waiting for you and will be taken to your accommodation. The next few days will be all about tropical reminiscing on the snow-white beaches of Zanzibar!

ZANZIBAR

Zanzibar is a very accessible island with many attractions. It is the ideal ending for sun worshippers who love Swahili cuisine and culture. There are also fun tropical activities organized all over Zanzibar, including snorkeling, diving, spice tours and a visit to the historic Stone Town. In addition, Zanzibar has beautiful accommodations for everyone’s budget, which are located right on the pearly white beach.

DAY 11 TO 13

TROPICAL AFTERGLOW ON ZANZIBAR

These days are all about tropical afterglow on tropical Zanzibar. If you still want to do something, you can book all kinds of fun excursions at your accommodation.

EXCURSIONS ZANZIBAR – (OPTIONAL)

There are plenty of fun excursions available on Zanzibar. Head out to Jozani Forest, historic Stone Town and/or go snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll. It is also fun to roam the beaches with mountain bikes and be amazed by the colorful Zanzibari that are also on the way. Don’t forget to take a look at the most beautiful restaurant; The Rock. And in any case, enjoy the excellent Swahili cuisine and fresh seafood that is available everywhere. You can easily discuss all excursion options at the reception of your stay. You are in charge of your own time in Zanzibar.

DAY 14

ANOTHER FULL DAY IN ZANZIBAR AND RETURN FLIGHT

Enjoy another full day at the preferred accommodation. It is not until nightfall that you will be taken to Zanzibar airport.

DAY 15

HOMECOMING

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast, take some time to capture your last moments on the white sandy beaches and enjoy your last shots at the beach and within the hotel environs. Check out from the resort and transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
