ITINERARY UGANDA THE PEARL OF AFRICA

DAY 1

WELCOME TO THE PEARL OF AFRICA!

Once you arrive, you will be met by a driver who will take you to the first accommodation in Entebbe (15min). Here you can enjoy a drink under African starry skies and a well-deserved night’s sleep.

ACCOMMODATION: Via Via Entebbe (Breakfast)

DAY 2

TO THE ORIGIN OF THE NILE

In the morning, meet your guide and give you a briefing about your trip. Then you drive through colorful markets and beautiful nature to the historic town of Jinja. Outside the town are several lodges, all of which have a beautiful view over the Nile. From here you can enjoy nature and the view, but you can also do all kinds of things here.

* 1 overnight stay is planned in Jinja. This will give you a peaceful and beautiful start to your journey and interrupt the long journey from Entebbe to Sipi Falls. You can also go horseback riding, rafting or tubing on the Nile, bungee jumping and quad biking. If you would like to do more than 1 activity in Jinja and/or want to go rafting (rafting lasts all day), we recommend that you book an extra night.

JINJA

Jinja is a city in eastern Uganda and is located on the eastern shore of Lake Victoria. Before the arrival of the Europeans, Jinja was a small fishing village. In the 19th century, several explorers went in search of the sources of the Nile. In the end, it was John Hannington Speke who found them in Jinja. Today, Jinja attracts travelers who enjoy the beautiful tropical nature and the many activities that are possible.

EXCURSIONS JINJA – (OPTIONAL)

You can really do anything from your accommodation! For both the adventurer and those who prefer to take it a little easier, there is plenty of choice. Various sports can be done on the river or in the surrounding area. Highly recommended for the adventurers is rafting, because this is the ultimate place for that because of all the rapids of the Nile near Jinja. In addition, you can also choose from tubing, whitewater canoeing, mountain biking or quad-biking. Those who want to take it a little easier may want to take a nice horseback ride along the Nile, or take a village walk. Of course you can also just relax at the lodge with a view over the Nile! You can book all activities through your guide or accommodation.

ACCOMMODATION: The Haven Eco River Lodge (Half Board)

DAY 3

TO THE PARADISIACAL AND LITTLE-VISITED SIPI FALLS

In the morning you can decide (in consultation with your guide) what you want to do. You can stay a little longer in Jinja (and do another activity) and drive to Sipi Falls only after lunch. You can also leave a little earlier to have a nice coffee tour in Sipi Falls. The choice is yours.

It takes about three hours to drive to Sipi Falls, on the border of Uganda and Kenya at the foot of Mount Elgon. The waterfalls, streams, flowers, and 40 shades of green add to the feeling that the Garden of Eden was meant to look something like this. This afternoon you can do a nice coffee tour or just enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

SIPI FALLS

The Sipi Falls area consists of three waterfalls and is located in eastern Uganda. The waterfalls are located on the edge of Mount Elgon National Park on the border with Kenya. The Sipi Falls and the Sipi River are named after the ‘Sep’, a native plant on the banks of the river, a medicinal plant used by the locals against measles and flu. The area is characterized by coffee plantations, rivers, waterfalls, chameleons, wild vegetation, traditional African villages and beautiful views of the Karamoja savannahs.

SIPI FALLS COFFEE TOUR – (OPTIONAL)

In Sipi Falls, fantastic Arabica coffee is grown of high quality. Many farmers with small plots of land form a cooperative. For example, their artisanal coffee beans are sold worldwide. You will experience the entire process from picking to drying, grinding with a large wooden mortar to cooking and drinking the coffee, all at the local farmer, who also gets a little extra.

ACCOMMODATION: Sipi Heritage Lodge – Banda (Half Board)

DAY 4

FULL DAY IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN (SIPI FALLS)

Today you will go for a walk through this beautiful area. You can decide how long you want to hike in consultation with your guide. If you choose the hike of about 6/7 hours, you can walk along all the waterfalls. In addition to the waterfalls, you will also walk past the coffee and banana plantations, local villages and see beautiful views. Along the way you can spot chameleons and if you bring your swimsuit and towel, you can even swim in a stream or shower under a waterfall. Whatever you choose; It’s going to be a wonderful day in paradise!

SIPI FALLS HIKE – FULL DAY

You will walk – accompanied by a local English speaking guide – through the beautiful Sipi Falls area. While strolling through this green area, you will alternate huge waterfalls with the local village life of the Ugandan countryside. You will also walk along streams and enjoy the colorful flowers and beautiful views. This is what the Garden of Eden must have looked like! During a full day of hiking, you can visit three waterfalls and spot chameleons in the coffee plantations along the way. It’s fun to swim in one of the streams and even take a refreshing shower under a waterfall. So bring your swimsuit and towel! You can also choose to walk shorter in consultation with your guide. You will be on the road all day. Along the way, you will have a local Ugandan lunch.

ACCOMMODATION: Sipi Heritage Lodge – Banda (Half Board)

DAY 5

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK KARAMOJA

After breakfast you will set sail for Northeast Uganda, completely off the beaten track, the adventure begins in Karamoja. Tonight you will spend the night in a nice camp near the village of Moroto at the foot of Mount Moroto. Several tribes live in this area, including the Ikk, Tepeth and Karamajong.

In the afternoon we visit a manyatta of the Karamajong tribe. You can also opt for a hike on Mount Moroto instead.

KARAMOJA REGION

The special Karamojong culture takes place in Northeast Uganda near Mount Moroto in the middle of Karamoja. The inhabitants of this vast and completely unexplored area are the Karamojong, a tribe affiliated with the Maasai in Kenya and Tanzania. Far away from tourism, this is a jewel that is completely in line with the philosophy of Wild Heritage of Africa Tour and Travel. Discover new areas and cultures in a sustainable way, with the proceeds benefiting the local population.

VISIT TO MANYATTA

In the morning, accompanied by a local guide, you will visit the traditional Bokoro Manyatta. The moment you arrive, life in the Manyatta awakens and the population is already busy milking the animals, grinding sortum, shaking yogurt, brewing local beers and building huts. Here and there, you will be invited to centuries-old local games and try to carry wood and kalabash on your head. What exactly you will find in the manyatta cannot be indicated in advance since you do not follow a standardized program but will experience what is going on in the village at that moment. In this way we experience the special Karamojong culture in a casual and authentic way!

HIKE MOUNT MOROTO (OPTIONAL)

You will depart in the morning for a beautiful hike at the foot of Mount Moroto. You will walk to the natural pool that flows over the steep ridge along the plains of Karamojaland. From the tip of this hike you have a beautiful view over the Karamojong valley. You will also come across several manyattas of the Tepeth tribe. The 10 km trail starts directly from Moroto and goes up the mountain via a steep path. The hike is classified as moderately difficult.

ACCOMMODATION: Karamoja Safari Camp (Half Board)

DAY 6

AUTHENTIC CULTURE OF KARAMOJONG TRIBE – TO KIDEPO VALLEY

In the morning you can choose to take a very nice boda-boda tour (moped taxi) or mountain bike tour through the beautiful surroundings of Karamoja (optional). In this way, the encounters with the locals are the most intimate.

You can also choose to drive to Kidepo Valley National Park early in the morning, so that you can do an extra jeep safari in the park this afternoon. The choice is yours!

The drive to Kidepo Valley National Park is one of the most scenic drives you can take in this country. The landscapes are rugged and everywhere there are koppens (rocks) and local villages and manyattas. Upon arrival at Kidepo Valley National Park, you will find yourself in a landscape reminiscent of the Lion King movies. When you see Simba lying on a rock, the picture is complete!

Please note: The Karamoja area is extremely diverse with beautiful mountains, hidden cultural treasures, a rich tribal life and much more. There is no place in Africa where you can still experience tribal life in such an authentic way. For people who are interested in cultural experiences and/or people who really like active travel (mountain biking / hiking) it is recommended to stay here for more nights.

MOUNTAIN BIKE TOUR KARAMOJA – (OPTIONAL)

A mountain bike safari through Karamoja is a fantastic way to discover the untamed Karamoja. You will drive on deserted colonial roads through the true wilderness of Uganda, where you will enjoy the beautiful landscapes. You can stop wherever you want and discover a large part of the area. It is fun to visit the villages and connect with the nomadic warriors and learn about the pastoral culture.

BODA BODA TOUR KARAMOJA – (OPTIONAL)

Traveling through Karamoja by boda-boda (moped taxi) is a great way to discover the untamed Karamoja. You will sit on the back of the moped and drive on deserted colonial roads through the true wilderness of Uganda, where you will enjoy the beautiful landscapes. You can stop wherever you want and discover a large part of the area. It is fun to visit the villages and connect with the nomadic warriors and learn about the pastoral culture.

A boda-boda is a moped taxi. It originated as a means of transport between the border of Kenya and Uganda. Hence the name: From border to border in English is “from border to border”. This corrupted into Boda-Boda.

KIDEPO VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

The Kidepo Valley National Park is the most remote Ugandan game park in the far northeast of the country, bordering South Sudan and North West Kenya. Rolling savannah, interrupted by rocky outcrops (‘kopjes’) and perpendicular granite mountains in the distance, give the park the most beautiful panoramas of Uganda. Add to that the very small number of tourists and you arrive at an absolute gem that is ready to be discovered!

ACCOMMODATION: Kidepo Savannah Lodge (Half Board)

DAY 7

SAFARI IN THE KIDEPO VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

This day is all about plenty of safari spectacle in the Kidepo Valley National Park. You will take a jeep safari in the morning and also a safari in the afternoon. In between the two safaris, you can enjoy your lunch and a moment of rest at your accommodation.

You can also choose to replace the afternoon safari with a walking safari. You also have the option to go on safari all day and not return to your lodge in between. In that case, please arrange a packed lunch at your accommodation.

JEEP SAFARI KIDEPO VALLEY – MORNING

During the safari, you will enjoy the beautiful vast landscapes. The differences in height in the park not only provide beautiful views, but also very diverse plant species, with the result that the diversity of animal species in this park is exceptionally large. Some animals are found nowhere else in Uganda such as the long-eared fox, striped hyena, aardwolf, caracal, cheetah and wild dog. Of course, lions, leopards and elephants are also present and the park has an astonishing number of 463 bird species. Up early for the morning safari in the Kidepo valley. When it’s still cool, the lions often seek out the rock formations and you might even take your ultimate Lion King photo!

JEEP SAFARI KIDEPO VALLEY – AFTERNOON

In the afternoon you will go on a safari when the wildlife becomes more active again after a few hours of resting in the shade. In the evening you can enjoy a campfire with the sounds of the African wilderness in the background.

WALKING SAFARI KIDEPO VALLEY – (OPTIONAL)

During the safari walk you will walk on the savannahs and enjoy the peace and quiet, the bush sounds and of course you will look for the different animal species. You will be accompanied by an armed ranger and walk among the borassus palms and along the seasonal rivers.

ACCOMMODATION: Kidepo Savannah Lodge (Half Board)

DAY 8

ACROSS NORTHERN UGANDA TO MURCHISON FALLS

Early departure for a long drive to Murchison Falls National Park. Especially the first 3 hours of your ride are beautiful, but the rest of the trip is also a feast for the eyes. If you spend the night on the south side of the Nile, your last hour of the journey will be through the park. The roof can be opened and you can spot your first safari wildlife! In the late afternoon, you will arrive at your accommodation, where you can enjoy the animal sounds around you and the beautiful views. You will spend the next three nights in Murchison Falls.

MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK

The Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest wildlife park and is split in two by the mighty Nile River. The landscape varies from dense rainforest in the hilly southwestern part to flat savannahs in the northwest. Murchison Falls is one of the greenest parks in Africa due to its location on the Nile. Perhaps the most impressive thing that happens to the Nile on its long journey from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea are the Murchison Falls.

ACCOMMODATION: Murchison River Lodge (Full Board)

DAY 9

LIONS, ELEPHANTS AND HIPPOS DURING THE SAFARIS

Today is all about all the wildlife and natural beauty that the Murchison Falls National Park has to offer. In the early morning you will make a jeep safari and in the afternoon you will make a great boat safari on the Nile, looking for hippos, crocodiles, water birds and with a bit of luck even bathing elephants! At the end of the day, you will be dropped off at your overnight stop.

JEEP SAFARI MURCHISON FALLS – MORNING

The safaris in Murchison Falls focus on the area northwest of the Nile. The green, rolling landscape is dominated by the characteristic Borassus palms, whose fruits are a delicacy for the savannah elephant. In addition to elephants, you will look for Rothschild giraffes, hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, several species of antelopes, and many tropical bird species. After an early breakfast, drive towards the delta area for the safari. The sun is rising and it’s still chilly, the best time for a safari across the savannah plains. Along the way, you will make a stop at the Nile, where hundreds of hippos are bathed in the sun.

BOAT SAFARI MURCHISON WATERFALL

Under the watchful eye of crocodiles, hippos, buffaloes and monkeys, you will sail slowly down the Nile. Monkeys will tell you that you are coming and waterfowl are busy fishing. Elephants and other wildlife are regularly spotted, quenching their thirst along the banks of the mighty Nile. The tour will eventually take you to the foot of the 40 meter high and famous waterfall (Murchison Falls). The trip takes about three hours. (We advise you to sit on the left side of the boat, as you will be sailing along the left bank)

PRIVATE BOAT SAFARI MURCHISON WATERFALL – AFTERNOON (OPTIONAL)

Under the watchful eye of crocodiles, hippos, buffaloes and monkeys, you will sail slowly down the Nile. Monkeys will tell you that you are coming and waterfowl are busy fishing. Elephants and other wildlife are regularly spotted, quenching their thirst along the banks of the mighty Nile. The tour will eventually take you to the foot of the 40 meter high and famous waterfall (Murchison Falls). The trip takes about three hours.
You have booked this activity in a private boat. This has a huge added value compared to the large general boat, because with a small boat you get much closer to the wildlife. You also set the pace yourself and it is nice to share this experience exclusively with your own company.

ACCOMMODATION: Murchison River Lodge (Full Board)

DAY 10

ENJOY ANOTHER DAY IN UGANDA’S MOST WILDLIFE-RICH PARK

Today is also dedicated to the most wildlife-rich park in Uganda. You will undertake a jeep safari in the morning. We don’t have anything planned in the afternoon, so you can also spend an afternoon relaxing and enjoying your accommodation with swimming pool. If you prefer to stay active, you can choose to take a second boat safari. This boat safari goes to the beautiful delta area and is completely different from the first boat safari. If you choose this, you will do this in the early morning and the jeep safari will be moved to the afternoon.

MURCHISON FALLS JEEP SAFARI – SECOND MORNING

After breakfast you will drive again to the delta area for the safari. This morning is all about other safari tracks to discover even more of the park. Of course, your guide will also look for predators if they have not yet been seen during the first safari.

BUSH CAMPING MURCHISON FALLS – (OPTIONAL)

By means of a safari you drive to the delta of Lake Albert, deep in the Murchison Falls National Park. Upon arrival, you will be amazed by the camp set up just for you in the middle of the wilderness. You won’t get any closer to nature than this ‘bush camp’. With the professional camping equipment (tent, strecht beds, bbq, table, chairs and lights) you will camp under the guidance of an armed ranger, guide and cook in the middle of the bush! There are no sanitary facilities or running water available, but the “ultimate bush experience” makes up for it. In the evening, a fantastic meal will be prepared for you and by the campfire you can listen to the sounds of hyenas and watch the hippos coming out of the water. By going bush camping, you have the park to yourself for the last hour in the evening and the first hour in the morning!

BOAT SAFARI DELTA LAKE ALBERT (OPTIONAL)

In addition to the regular boat safari to the waterfall, it is also possible to take a boat safari through the delta area in this park. The delta area is located in the part where the Victoria Nile merges into Lake Albert and then into the Albert Nile. This delta area looks like a smaller version of the famous Okavango Delta (Botswana) and is full of wildlife, such as hippos, crocodiles and bathing elephants. This boat safari is also a dream for bird lovers. Special birds such as the Saddle-billed Stork, the African Giant Kingfisher and the prehistoric-looking Shoebill Stork are regularly spotted.

ACCOMMODATION: Murchison River Lodge (Full Board)

DAY 11

PAST TEA FIELDS, CRATER LAKES AND RAINFORESTS TO KIBALE FOREST

After your breakfast, drive to the top of the waterfall, from which this park takes its name. You can take a beautiful walk here. Then you will drive on to Kibale Forest. You drive past villages, rainforests, tea plantations and crater lakes towards Fort Portal. On a clear day you can see the Rwenzori Mountains with its snow-capped peaks and on arrival at Kibale Forest you will find yourself in a completely different world; A monkey world!

HIKE MURCHISON WATERFALL – MORNING

At the top of the Murchison waterfall, you will take a walk to see this natural spectacle from different points. You will see the falls up close and feel the power of the Nile plunging into the depths with enormous force through a fissure barely seven meters wide. If time permits, you can walk down a bit to see the entire waterfall, a beautiful sight! Before leaving the park this morning, you will make a short photo stop at the top of the waterfall.

KIBALE FOREST NATIONAL PARK

Kibale Forest is one of the most primate-rich rainforests in Africa. The primeval forest is home to 13 different primate species, including the red-tailed monkey, black-and-white frilled monkey, red frilled monkey, diadem monkey, mantled mangabey and the galago. The protected nature reserve is located at an average altitude of 1300 meters and is surrounded by tea plantations in the north and papyrus swamps in the south. In addition to the primate species, there are also many special bird species in the forest and swamp of Bigodi.

ACCOMMODATION: Turaco Treetops – Standard Cottage (Half Board)

DAY 12

IN SEARCH OF CHIMPANZEES AND OTHER SPECIAL APES

Today is all about the various monkey species that live in this beautiful rainforest and adjacent swamp area. In the morning you will go on a chimpanzee trekking and in the afternoon you will take a walk through the swamps/wetlands of Bigodi. In between activities, enjoy lunch and a moment of rest at your accommodation

*The order of the activities is based on the available chimpanzee permits. So you may find that your swamp walk is in the morning and the chimpanzee trekking is in the afternoon.

CHIMPANZEE TREKKING KIBALE FOREST

You undertake the special chimpanzee trekking. Using broken branches, droppings, food debris and sounds, you and a ranger will search for these noisy primates. It is always a question of how you will meet the chimpanzees, but face to face with a great ape that looks very much like us is a fascinating experience.

BIGODI SWAMP WALK – AFTERNOON

Today you will take a swamp walk through Bigodi Swamp, where you will look for the special giant turako in addition to several monkey species; one of Uganda’s most beautiful birds. You will make the walk in the afternoon. Then it gets cooler and you will see most of the monkey species going foraging.

ACCOMMODATION: Turaco Treetops – Standard Cottage (Half Board)

DAY 13

HIPPOS AND BATHING ELEPHANTS DURING THE BOAT SAFARI

After your stay in the first rainforest of this trip, you will continue your journey towards the Queen Elizabeth National Park. Today you will travel through rural life, from the green hills full of tea plantations and crater lakes to the dry savannah of the Queen Elizabeth National Park. Along the way you will come across several Matoke markets.

In the afternoon, you will embark on one of the most spectacular boat safaris the continent of Africa has to offer.

Please note: In this trip, you will spend 1 night in Queen Elizabeth National Park. We have chosen 1 night, because in this trip you will go to no less than 4 national parks. However, because there are many special activities to do in this park (see optional activities), you can also choose to add an extra night. We tailor each trip to your needs, so we organize it the way you want it.

QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

The Queen Elizabeth National Park of almost 2000 km is located in the rift valley and borders the Rwenzori mountains to the north and Lake Edward to the west. At the heart of this nature reserve is the Kazinga Canal, which connects the Edward and George lakes. You can go on amazing boat safaris here. To the west of the Kazinga canal there is a landscape with beautiful volcanic craters. The Kyambura Gorge is a huge crack in the savannah landscape, where there is a rainforest and where chimpanzees live. The Queen Elizabeth NP is home to elephants, buffaloes, topis, lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles and much more. It is home to more than 600 species of birds.

QUEEN ELIZABETH BOAT SAFARI

The Queen Elizabeth National Park is surrounded by Lake Edward and Lake George lakes. These lakes are connected by the natural Kazinga canal and are packed with wildlife! A boat trip on this canal is therefore one of the absolute highlights of your visit to the park. Rarely will you see so many hippos in one day! In addition to the hippos, you can spot huge crocodiles, bathing buffalo and a huge variety of birds. When you also see a group of elephants spraying each other with water, you know that your day has been a complete success!

QUEEN ELIZABETH PRIVATE BOAT SAFARI – AFTERNOON (OPTIONAL)

The Queen Elizabeth National Park is surrounded by Lake Edward and Lake George lakes. These lakes are connected by the natural Kazinga canal and are packed with wildlife! A boat trip on this canal is therefore one of the absolute highlights of your visit to the park. Rarely will you see so many hippos in one day! In addition to the hippos, you can spot huge crocodiles, bathing buffalo and a huge variety of birds. When you also see a group of elephants spraying each other with water, you know that your day has been a complete success!

You have booked this activity in a private boat. This has a huge added value compared to the large general boat, because with a small boat you get much closer to the wildlife. You also set the pace yourself and it is nice to share this experience exclusively with your own company.

ACCOMMODATION: Katara Lodge (Half Board)

DAY 14

OFF TO BWINDI / THE FAIRYTALE LAKE OF MUTANDA

In the morning, you will leave the northern part of Queen Elizabeth National Park. You will drive to the southern part of the park in about 2 hours; Ishasha. Here you will take a short (1.5 hours) jeep safari, during which you will look for the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha.

After this safari you will drive towards Bwindi, in the south-west of the country. The ride is truly beautiful and typifies the diversity of Uganda. You will drive past rainforests, crater lakes and coffee plantations and over mountains and hills, until you reach Bwindi and/or the volcanoes on the picturesque Lake Mutanda. What a view!

*Only the mid-range and semi-luxury accommodation variant of this trip stay overnight at Lake Mutanda (6 hours drive).

* The budget variant does not sleep on Lake Mutanda, but directly on the Bwindi rainforest in southern Bwindi (6 hours drive).

The luxury variant of this trip will spend the night at the north end of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, in Buhoma about a 4-hour drive from Queen Elizabeth National Park.

ISHASHA

The southern part of the Queen Elizabeth National Park is Ishasha. The remote location on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo ensures a small number of visitors, which benefits the wilderness content. The savannahs are punctuated by numerous wild fig trees used by the tree-climbing lions. The Ntungwe River flows through Ishasha where hippos live and the vegetation is lush and dense.

JEEP SAFARI ISHASHA – MORNING

During the safari you will look for the tree-climbing lions, which search for the upper branches of old fig trees. Ishasha is also home to buffaloes, large groups of Ugandan kobs and lyre antelopes. In the Ntungwe River you can look for hippos. You need to get up early for the morning safari in Ishasha. While it’s still cool, the predators may still be active. When it gets warmer in the course of the morning, the lions look for the trees, which can result in beautiful photos.

PREDATOR TRACKING QUEEN ELIZABETH – MORNING (OPTIONAL)

In the morning you will make a special safari, where you will go on safari together with a biologist from the park. This biologist studies the behaviour and movements of various lion troops and a number of individual leopards. This allows you to look through the eyes of biologists and learn about the king of the savannah in a unique way! The lion troops (and leopards) are tracked by means of a radio collar, so you will hit the lions at all times. Leopards are not guaranteed. Because you go with the biologist, you can get off the roads and paths. The income from this activity is used to fund the research. This excursion takes place in the morning.

LAKE MUTANDA

The fairytale Lake Mutanda is located in the far southwest of Uganda, at the foot of the Virunga volcano chain. This impressive volcanic chain connects the countries of Uganda, Congo and Rwanda. In the vicinity of Lake Mutanda there are several rainforests, habitat of the endangered mountain gorilla. The lake is therefore an ideal base for one of the most special excursions in Uganda, the gorilla trekking. The mountain gorilla can be found in the nearby Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. However, a wide variety of animals and plants can also be found in the immediate vicinity of the lake. For example, it is possible to spot the kingfishers and the grey crowned crane. In addition to plants and birds, various species of snakes, otters, chameleons, frogs and lizards also live on the shores of the lake. In short: a large collection of special animal species.

ACCOMMODATION: Mutanda Lake Resort – Standard Cottage (Half Board)

DAY 15

THE GREAT GORILLA TREKKING!

In the morning you will travel to the Bwindi or Mgahinga National Park for perhaps the highlight of your trip, the gorilla trekking. In the afternoon you will enjoy this special meeting.

If you don’t go gorilla trekking, you can also do all kinds of things. The possibilities are described at day 16

BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST NATIONAL PARK

The mountain rainforest of Bwindi, together with the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda, is the most important area for gorilla trekking. The relatively small nature reserve is home to almost half of all mountain gorillas living in the wild. In addition to the mountain gorillas, there are a total of 120 species of mammals and 350 species of birds.

GORILLA TREKKING BWINDI FOREST (OPTIONAL)

During the gorilla trekking you will walk and bend through the dense forest of Bwindi. Under the guidance of the most experienced rangers of the Ugandan Wildlife Authority (UWA), you will search for traces of a family of mountain gorillas. Feces, nests, gnawed bamboo stalks and broken twigs betray that we are getting close. Then, when the time comes for you to come face to face with a silverback protecting his family, observing you seemingly carelessly, you know that this is going to be an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.

GORILLA HABITUATION DAY BWINDI FOREST (OPTIONAL)

Wild Heritage of Africa Tour and Travel offers you the opportunity to take the unique gorilla habituation day instead of gorilla trekking. During this special excursion you will join a group of researchers to experience how a gorilla family is habituated. Participants are allowed to stay with the gorilla family for up to four hours and the excursion is undertaken in a group of only four people. A special look at the habituation of the gorillas.

ACCOMMODATION: Mutanda Lake Resort – Standard Cottage (Half Board)

DAY 16

FREE DAY AT THE SCENIC LAKE OF MUTANDA/ BWINDI

Today you can sleep in and enjoy a day in which everything is possible and nothing is necessary. In the lake you can swim (among the otters) and on the lake you can go supping, sailing, kayaking or take a boat trip on the motorboat. You can also choose to go hiking in the area or take a brisk hike over the volcanoes of the Mgahinga National park. You can also do a Golden Monkey draw here.

If you spend the night in Buhoma, you can take a special village tour or choose from the many hiking opportunities in the area. These activities can be booked on site.

EXCURSIONS BWINDI & LAKE MUTANDA – (OPTIONAL)

In this green and diverse environment you can really do anything. There are several fun excursions to be undertaken on and around Lake Mutanda, such as sailing, supping or kayaking on the lake. A sundowner tour (with a drink) on the motorboat is also recommended. In the Mgahinga NP you can climb the Virunga volcanoes or do a Golden Monkey trekking and in the rainforest of Bwindi you can – in addition to gorilla trekking – also make several beautiful walks. You can also visit the Batwa pygmies or take a village tour in the area. Do you have specific interests? Let our travel specialist know your wishes.

WATER SPORTS LAKE MUTANDA – (OPTIONAL)

From Mutanda Lake Resort you can do great water sports activities. For example, you can enjoy swimming in this bilharzia-free lake or sunbathe from one of the three swimming jetties. If you want to be a little more active you can use the stand-up paddle boards, the kayaks or the laser sailboat and for a more local experience you can go canoeing in one of the dugout canoes. There is also a motorboat, with which you can take a trip on the lake to go bird watching or simply enjoy the surroundings (with a glass of wine). Whatever you choose; Enjoy the beautiful surroundings and the serenity of this fairytale lake.

* You can book all activities on site at Mutanda Lake Resort.

GOLDEN MONKEY TREKKING MGAHINGA – (OPTIONAL)

You will go trekking to the rare Golden Monkeys! Mgahinga National Park is home to several habituated groups. The trekking takes place at the foot of the Virunga volcanoes. Once in the forest, you can stay with the monkeys for an hour. They love to jump, swing, and play. Photographing these special animals will therefore be a real challenge.

ASCENT SABINYO VOLCANO, MGAHINGA – (OPTIONAL)

Who wouldn’t want to climb a volcano where you are in three countries at the same time when you are at the top?! Today you will brave the Sabinyo volcano at an altitude of 3669 meters. It can get quite muddy, which is why wooden ladders have been installed to ensure that you make an adventurous climb on the three peaks of the volcano. The walk takes an average of 8 hours. From the peaks there are beautiful views and you can see the lakes and gorges in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

SABINYO GORGE TREKKING, MGAHINGA – (OPTIONAL)

The walk along the Virunga volcanoes offers the opportunity to go deep into the ‘gorge’ of Sabinyo. The ‘Gorge’ is located in the southwest of Mgahinga National Park. You will walk through beautiful vegetation and moss-covered ground. The trek offers a very good idea of how high Mount Sabinyo really is, as the end is rewarded with a great view over the peaks of the national park. The end point is also known as one of the best places in the area for bird watching. The walk takes 4 to 5 hours and various reptiles and bird species are hiding in the gorge. With a bit of luck, you might even spot the rare golden meerkats.

ACCOMMODATION: Mutanda Lake Resort – Standard Cottage (Half Board)

DAY 17

TO THE LOVELY LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK

It is with very intense memories that you leave Lake Mutanda behind. Not only the experience with the protégés of Dian Fossy (‘Gorillas in the mist’) is imprinted in your memory for a lifetime, but also the beauty, power and unique appearance of Central African nature.

Via the road that connects Rwanda with Kampala and Kenya, you drive to the lovely Lake Mburo National Park.

Tonight you can enjoy your beautiful lodge and the beautiful surroundings. You can also (optionally) choose to go on a night safari.

LAKE MBURO NATIONAL PARK

Lake Mburo National Park is the smallest safari area in Uganda and the only nature reserve where the impala and the eland antelope live. In the center of the park is Lake Mburo where hippos, crocodiles and many bird species are found.

NIGHT SAFARI LAKE MBURO – (OPTIONAL)

Just before dinner you will go on an exciting night safari where you will look for galagos, hyenas and also have a good chance of seeing a leopard!

DAY 18

HIKING OR MOUNTAIN BIKING SAFARI IN LAKE MBURO

In the morning, you can choose between a mountain bike safari or a walking safari through the park (included). Because there are no lions and elephants in this park, this can be done safely. Both activities are a great way to explore this park and its wildlife in an intimate way.

You can also choose (optionally) to take a horseback riding safari through the park. This can only be booked if you stay overnight at Mihingo Lodge.

After your morning activity and a (late) breakfast, you will drive (across the equator) back to Entebbe. You will be dropped off at the airport in the early evening for your return flight home.

This is the end of your trip through Uganda. We hope you had a blast!

WALKING SAFARI LAKE MBURO – MORNING

Accompanied by a ranger, you will walk through the park in search of zebras, buffaloes, eland antelopes and giraffes. This is also an excellent way for bird lovers to take beautiful pictures because there are no less than 310 species of birds that live in Lake Mburo National Park!

MOUNTAIN BIKE SAFARI LAKE MBURO – MORNING (OPTIONAL)

You will make a wonderful mountain bike ride through the green nature of Lake Mburo National Park and surroundings. Along the way you will encounter zebras, impalas and lyre antelopes, and you will also enjoy the views. Due to the height differences in Lake Mburo National Park, the mountain bike safari is a challenging tour and therefore a wonderful start to your day!

HORSEBACK RIDING SAFARI LAKE MBURO – MORNING (OPTIONAL)

During the horseback riding safari in the Lake Mburo National Park you will explore the region by horseback. An exciting adventure for both advanced and beginners. Please note: You must not weigh more than 90 kilograms and we cannot book this in advance, so availability must be checked on site. You can only book this activity if you stay overnight at Mihingo Lodge.
