The most famous destination in Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park has become synonymous with mountain gorilla trekking safaris and no visit to the country would be complete without visiting these majestic primates. It is part of the Virunga Conservation Area and covers more than 125km2, including five extinct volcanoes: Muhabura, Sabyinyo, Gahinga, Karisimbi and Bisoke. The latter two can be climbed during one or two-day treks.

Against this backdrop, tourists can hike through the lush bamboo and Hygenie rainforest, open grassland and swamp of Volcanoes National Park to discover golden monkeys, bush duiker, buffalo and spotted hyenas. You will not have to listen too hard before you hear one of the 178 recorded bird species in the park. Look through the gaps in the dense forest canopy and you will also see the breathtaking peaks of the volcanoes standing tall at over 4,500m.

Gorilla Trekking

Golden Monkey Tracking

Beautiful, critically endangered golden monkeys are indigenous to the Virunga woodlands. Trekking is another popular activity in Volcanoes National Park that draws thousands of visitors to this jungle.

Hiking Mount Bisoke

If you ever find yourself in Rwanda, make it a point to climb Mount Bisoke. Among the many volcanoes in the Virungas, Mount Bisoke is one of the most active. Mount Bisoke is a 12,175-foot mountain that straddles the boundary between Rwanda (Volcanoes National Park) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. (Virunga National Park). 

Visiting the Tomb of Dian Fossey

One of the best primatologists of all time is Dian Fossey. Her tenacity and daring helped the Volcanoes National Park drastically cut down on animal poaching, especially that of mountain gorillas. Mountain gorillas would likely be gone by today if not for her efforts. 

Musanze Caves Hike

Lakes Ruhondo and Burera
